From Kilowatts to Kilograms: Energy Efficiency for Indoor Cultivation

Cultivation & Processing

Room: Hall D-10
Session: FR13
Time:
Friday, December 17
2:45PM - 3:45PM

The legalization of recreational cannabis in 17 states (and counting) has created a surge of cultivation licenses, new construction, and retrofits to existing buildings. Cultivation facilities have rushed to increase production, expanding into new facilities and using industry-standard technologies and often lacking any energy consideration in the process. As a result of this fast growth, the California electrical grid has been sharply impacted due to the load from indoor cannabis cultivation. The projected market growth in California is going to continue at a rapid pace which will impart more load on our struggling grid in the state and across the country. Panelists will be taking a deep dive into both the prevalent and emerging energy-efficient technologies that cultivators need to know about. The presentation will also include a summary of ERI’s recent cannabis market study for the Emerging Technologies Coordinating Council and discuss the current and projected state of the market. The presentation is grower-focused and energy-centric, with crucial information about what can be done now to reduce energy consumption and operating costs while increasing production and yields. The session will also explore what is coming soon in terms of changes to energy codes, utility programs, and upcoming opportunities for incentives that can support energy-efficient upgrades.
