9:00 AM–12:00 PM Morning Workshop BSuccess in Sustainability: Developing, Evaluating and Promoting the Sustainability and Resiliency of Your Cannabis Business (Read More) Building off of the success of our three previous pre-conference sessions, this year we propose a four-hour session focusing on how companies develop, evaluate and promote their organization's environmental sustainability using real world examples. The sustainability of Cannabis cultivation varies widely between operations and exists on a spectrum. Consumers want to know how their Cannabis is cultivated and deserve to know how the Cannabis they are purchasing impacts the environment. The session will start with an overview of sustainability metrics, exhibit the value of sustainably produced goods in the marketplace and illustrate the power of eco-labels as demonstrated in other crops such as coffee and chocolate. The bulk of the session will revolve around understanding and implementing sustainable measures that mitigate risk and save money. These techniques will be showcased through case studies and demos by growers, who will share their experiences in developing benchmarks and tracking their resource usage. Attendees will be provided handouts with templates and examples to encourage further participation by giving them a guide to draw from their experiences as well as to provide useful take home information. Topics to be discussed include energy, water, waste, and IPM. The session will then transition into small group breakout sessions focusing on how companies promote and market their sustainability efforts. This section will begin with a group discussion on greenwashing in the Cannabis industry followed by a discussion about how to market your company’s sustainability successes. This section will be guided by a series of questions proposed by our experts. The session will conclude with an overview of the various certification programs available in the market, including organic, sustainability, and regenerative options. |

NCIA’s Policy Council Presents: Testing Policy Recommendations and Other Developments from the Industry’s “Think Tank" (Read More)
At the beginning of 2017, NCIA officially launched its Policy Council, with a mission of developing policy and producing white papers that would help convey issues of importance to the industry and educate elected officials and staff in Washington, DC. Since that time, the Council has produced a series of what papers on topics ranging from federal tax policy to the EPA’s unwillingness to approve the use of pesticides on cannabis. In the fall of 2017, the Council convened a working group of cannabis testing experts and industry operators in order to develop thoughtful recommendations for consistent testing policies in states across the country. After months of work, those recommendations are now complete and will be discussed at this session. Policy Council director Steve Fox will also provide a broader update about the Council’s past and upcoming work.
