Sam originally became interested in the marijuana industry as a student at the University of Connecticut, where he was active in the school's Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) chapter while obtaining a degree in political science. As chapter president he played a leading role in decriminalizing marijuana in Connecticut, and was soon elected Student Body President on a platform that included drug policy reform. Among other achievements, he used this position to equalize penalties for marijuana possession and underage drinking on UConn’s campus and legalize medical marijuana at the state level.
He has been heavily involved in the drug policy reform movement for many years, serving on SSDP’s board of directors from March 2012 to September 2014 and chairing the board for the second half of his term. Sam has also served on the ACLU-CT’s board of directors (2011-13) and interned at the Drug Policy Alliance’s DC office, where he assisted in the successful campaign for a 911 Good Samaritan law in the District. He has advocated for drug policy reform on The Katie Couric Show and NPR’s Colin McEnroe Show, and has been published in numerous publications including The Hartford Courant, High Times Magazine, The Hartford Advocate, and The Huffington Post.
